Repair efforts on a sub-branch of North Delhi's Munak Canal persisted into Friday, following a breach that resulted in water inundating residential zones, including the JJ Colony of Bawana.
On Thursday night, dewatering machines were deployed to address the waterlogging caused by the breach in the Munak Canal's Career Lined Channel (CLC), triggering floods in adjacent areas. Delhi's Lieutenant Governor, V.K. Saxena, conducted an on-site review of the flooding situation.
In an urgent response, the CEO of the Delhi Jal Board announced that repairs were underway at a rapid pace, with an expected completion by Friday evening. The LG instructed the Chief Secretary to engage with the Water Minister and the Flood Control Minister of Delhi to communicate with Haryana authorities for the swift restoration and maintenance of the canal.
The LG's directive also included coordinating with Haryana officials to expedite the canal's repair. Meanwhile, NDRF teams were dispatched to evacuate residents. The Irrigation and Flood Control Department was tasked with deploying pumps to clear the water and providing additional boats for NDRF operations.
DUSIB was instructed to implement relief and rehabilitation measures, ensuring essential services and shelters are available. The Revenue Department's Disaster Management Cell was also activated to provide standardized relief efforts. The Area District Magistrate received orders to deploy executive magistrates to spearhead relief and rescue missions.
Public announcements were recommended to inform residents about the available arrangements. Additionally, the Health Department was instructed to station medical teams to tackle any emergencies. The LG's communication highlighted the necessity for regular maintenance of the Munak Canal, a task assigned to the Delhi Jal Board in coordination with Haryana’s Irrigation Department.
