Delhi University's Proposal to Include 'Manusmriti' in Law Course Rejected

The proposal to include the ancient Sanskrit text 'Manusmriti' in Delhi University Law Faculty's curriculum has been rejected. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and Vice Chancellor Yogesh Singh confirmed the decision, emphasizing commitment to the Constitution. BSP Chief Mayawati welcomed the rejection, citing the text's inconsistency with constitutional principles.

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan announced that the proposal to incorporate 'Manusmriti' into the syllabus of Delhi University's law course has not been endorsed. He clarified that after discussing the matter with the University’s Vice-Chancellor, it was confirmed that the Academic Council had not approved any such proposal.

Pradhan stated, 'The Vice Chancellor rejected the proposal yesterday. Our commitment to the Constitution and a forward-looking approach remains steadfast. There is no question of including any controversial material from any script.' On Thursday, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Yogesh Singh confirmed that the proposal to include 'Manusmriti' in the LLB curriculum was indeed rejected.

Bahujan Samaj Party leader Mayawati appreciated the decision, noting that opposition to teaching 'Manusmriti' in the Law Faculty was natural and branded the rejection a positive move. She emphasized that the Manusmriti contradicts the principles on which Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar based the Indian Constitution, making its inclusion inappropriate.
