Rescuers recommenced an underground search for a missing miner in southern Poland Friday, following a powerful tremor at the Rydultowy coal mine that left one miner dead and 17 injured.
Aleksandra Wysocka-Siembiga, spokesperson for the Polish Coal Mining Group, informed The Associated Press that security conditions had improved enough to allow the search to continue overnight. Operations were halted Thursday due to the risk of additional tremors and elevated methane gas levels.
The tremor, measuring 3.1 in magnitude, occurred approximately 1,200 metres (4,000 feet) beneath the surface early Thursday. Seventy-eight miners were in the vicinity, most of whom were quickly brought to the surface, including 17 who were immediately hospitalized. Sadly, one miner was pronounced dead as he was brought out.
Rock bursts, triggered by stress build-up in the rock, present a significant danger to miners, including those working in Poland's hazardous coal mines. This year, the Polish Coal Mining Group has already experienced multiple fatal incidents. Severe mining conditions, including the risks of methane gas explosions and cave-ins, amplify the dangers in Poland's aging coal mines.
