Delhi police have registered an FIR against a local resident for posting "lewd and derogatory" comments online about the widow of Kirti Chakra awardee Captain Anshuman Singh. This action followed a directive from the National Commission for Women (NCW), urging immediate police intervention and a detailed report within three days.
According to the police, the complaint originated from the NCW, which cited the social media user's offensive comment on a photo of the late soldier's widow. The NCW said the remark violated Section 79 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, and Section 67 of the Information Technology Act, 2000. "NCW condemns this behaviour and urges immediate police action," the women's panel stated on X (formerly Twitter).
Upon taking cognizance of the complaint and conducting a preliminary examination, the police registered an FIR under the relevant sections at the Police Station Special Cell and initiated an investigation. The matter remains under investigation.
Captain Anshuman Singh, a medical officer with the 26 Punjab unit, was stationed in the Siachen Glacier area when a fire broke out at an Indian Army ammunition dump on July 19, 2023. Captain Singh heroically rescued four to five people but tragically succumbed while retrieving medical supplies amid the raging fire. He was posthumously awarded the Kirti Chakra.
President Droupadi Murmu presented the award to Captain Singh's wife, Smriti, and his mother in a solemn ceremony attended by high-ranking officials. (ANI)
