Assam Floods: Death Toll Rises to 91, Over 12 Lakh People Affected

Assam floods have claimed 91 lives and affected over 12.33 lakh people. Key rivers are flowing above danger levels, impacting 21 districts. Relief efforts are underway with 2.95 lakh people in shelters. Wildlife, including 10 rhinos, also severely affected, especially in Kaziranga National Park.

The flood situation in Assam has escalated, claiming 91 lives statewide, according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA). The toll increased from 90 to 91 with seven additional deaths recorded on Friday.

The Disaster Reporting and Information Management System (DRIMS) noted that the Brahmaputra River in Neamatighat, Tezpur, and Dhubri; the Burhi Dihing tributary in Chenimari (Khowang); the Disang River in Nanglamuraghat; and the Kushiyara River in Karimganj are flowing above danger levels. Twenty-one districts, including Cachar, Nalbari, Kamrup, Golaghat, Goalpara, Morigaon, and Dibrugarh, have been affected.

Despite slight improvements, over 12.33 lakh people remain affected by the deluge, submerging 2,406 villages and 32,924.32 hectares of crop area. Dhubri district is the worst-hit with 3,18,326 affected individuals, followed by Cachar with 1,48,609. More than 2.95 lakh people are in relief camps.

The flood report also highlighted that 6,67,175 animals have been affected. In Kaziranga National Park, 180 wild animals have perished, including 10 rhinos. Field Director Sonali Ghosh reported multiple wildlife casualties and ongoing rescue efforts, though 35 forest camps remain submerged.
