HSBC Appoints Georges Elhedery as Group CEO Amid Strategic Asian Pivot

HSBC Holdings Plc has appointed Georges Elhedery as its new group chief executive, effective September 2, marking the lender's third CEO in less than eight years.

Elhedery, the current chief financial officer, will succeed outgoing CEO Noel Quinn this September. Elhedery, born in Lebanon, joined HSBC in 2005 and has held several key positions including co-head of Global Banking and Markets and CEO of the Middle Eastern, North Africa, and Turkiye region.

Quinn, who has led the bank for five years, will remain until Elhedery takes over and will assist through his 12-month notice period until April 2025. Under Quinn’s leadership, HSBC saw significant asset sales and navigated the complexities of a global pandemic.

The leadership change coincides with HSBC’s renewed focus on its Asian markets to drive profit. The lender, Europe’s largest by assets, has reduced its global presence by a quarter since the 2008 financial crisis to allocate more resources to Asia.

The announcement of Elhedery’s replacement as Group CFO is expected in due course.
