HSBC Appoints Georges Elhedery as New CEO Amid Growth Ambitions and Challenges

HSBC Holdings Plc has named Georges Elhedery as its next CEO, highlighting a preference for continuity amid growth ambitions. Elhedery, who is 50, will replace outgoing chief Noel Quinn on September 2, becoming the bank's third CEO in under eight years. This move was part of an internal selection process, despite considering external candidates.

Since 2020, Elhedery has served as the co-head of HSBC's Global Banking and Markets division, which constitutes 24% of the group's revenue. Starting his career as a rates trader, he joined HSBC in 2005 and was a surprise choice as CFO in October 2022. Elhedery also led HSBC's Middle Eastern, North Africa, and Turkiye operations from 2016 to 2019.

Quinn, who led HSBC for five years, will remain in his role until Elhedery's tenure begins. Under Quinn's leadership, HSBC underwent asset sales, managed a global pandemic, and achieved record profits. With a balance sheet of $3 trillion, HSBC eyes growth in Asia, despite challenges like geopolitical tensions and China's economic slowdown. Elhedery’s appointment comes at a critical time, with the bank reporting its annual results on July 31.
