In a tragic turn of events, four people lost their lives and three others went missing due to a massive landslide triggered by heavy rains in the Uttar Kannada district of Karnataka, according to a senior officer. The landslide occurred near Shirur village in Ankola Taluk along National Highway 66 on Tuesday.
Uttara Kannada Deputy Commissioner Lakshmi Priya, while speaking to ANI on Wednesday, revealed that seven people, including four members of one family, were involved in the incident. 'There was a significant landslide in Shirur village. Among the affected were a husband, wife, their two children, and an elderly person from a tea stall, as well as residents of two nearby houses,' she said.
'Of these seven individuals, we have recovered four bodies. Three people remain missing, including a gas tanker driver,' DC Priya added. She noted that two out of three gas tankers were safely unloaded, while one loaded tanker is still in the river.
Rescue operations are being conducted by a National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team comprising 24 members, along with fire service personnel. 'Support from the Navy and Coast Guard, who have supplied safety gear and personnel, has been invaluable in this operation. We also have a quick response team from gas companies aiding the effort,' Priya stated.
The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) is working to clear one side of the road to resume traffic flow, which had been halted by the landslide. 'According to NHAI, the road should be partially cleared within 24 to 48 hours, pending weather conditions,' she added.
