Community Seeks Unity After Tragic Loss of Former Fire Chief

Wednesday's public event was the first of two to honor Comperatore's life. A visitation for friends was scheduled for Thursday at Laube Hall in Freeport.

A sign outside Lernerville Speedway in Sarver, where the vigil was held, read: “Rest in Peace Corey, Thank You For Your Service,” featuring the fire company logo.

On the rural road to the auto racing track, signs of support lined the way. Comperatore, 50, was a project engineer, Army reservist, and long-serving volunteer firefighter. He died during the attempt on Trump's life at the Butler rally, shielding his wife and daughter from gunfire.

The family described Comperatore as “our beloved father and husband” in a statement, finding comfort in global support and their faith community.

Vigil organizer Kelly McCollough emphasized that the event was about unity, not politics, calling for love, safety, and healing.

Speakers at the vigil, including friend Dan Ritter and Jeff Lowers of the Freeport Fire Department, praised Comperatore's heroism and spirit.

The vigil concluded with attendees lighting candles and raising cellphones, glow sticks, and lighters as Comperatore's favorite song, “I Can Only Imagine” by MercyMe, played.

Two others were injured in the attack and have been upgraded to serious but stable condition. Former President Trump suffered a minor ear injury.
