Twelve civil aviation authorities and airport fire rescue personnel from South West State in Somalia recently completed an Airport Fire and Rescue course conducted by the United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS) Aviation Services. The training, held in Baidoa, the administrative capital of South West State, aimed to enhance safety standards in Somalia's aviation sector, specifically focusing on Shaati Gaduud International Airport.
The course, a follow-up to an earlier two-month firefighting training in Mogadishu, is part of UNSOS's ongoing efforts to build local capacity to meet international aviation standards. According to UNSOS Fire Marshall and lead instructor, Kijjali Robert William, the participants received comprehensive training in firefighting and emergency response tailored to aviation incidents, ensuring they can meet the critical international response time of 2-3 minutes.
Key areas covered during the training included firefighting techniques, fire dynamics, first aid, handling of equipment, airfield operations, aircraft construction, emergency communication, and physical fitness. Kijjali emphasized the importance of effective communication in emergency operations and confirmed the trainees' readiness to handle aviation emergencies.
Mohamed Shamim, UNSOS Chief Air Operations in Baidoa, underscored UNSOS's commitment to providing necessary aviation equipment and firefighting support until responsibilities can be transferred to the local administration. He highlighted the eventual integration of the trainees into Somalia's Civil Aviation Authority, where they will continue to collaborate closely with UNSOS.
Trainee Abdisalam Abdiqadir Abdinoor expressed gratitude for the training, noting its significant impact on local capacity building. He highlighted the community's appreciation for the program, expressing readiness to apply acquired skills to serve his community effectively.
Hassan Abdinoor Adan, the South West State Minister of Transport and Aviation, commended UNSOS for conducting the course, emphasizing its role in developing local expertise critical for Somalia's aviation industry. He praised the trainees for their dedication and highlighted the course's importance in maintaining and improving aviation safety and operations.
In addition to training, UNSOS continues to manage Baidoa airfield operations, including runway maintenance, air traffic support, equipment provision, aviation security, and ongoing infrastructure projects like the installation of a 7km security fence at Shaati Gaduud International Airport. These efforts aim to enhance the airport's operational capabilities and ensure sustainable aviation services in South West State, Somalia.
