Progress on Electrifying Temporary Houses for Flood-Hit Families Welcomed

Van Niekerk announced that 20 families will be accommodated in the newly constructed temporary shelters in Walmer.

Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Mayor, Gary van Niekerk, has expressed satisfaction with the ongoing efforts to electrify temporary housing for families displaced by floods in Walmer, Gqeberha. The metro is expediting work to restore normalcy for the affected residents.

Van Niekerk announced that 20 families will be accommodated in the newly constructed temporary shelters in Walmer. He noted the progress in infrastructure development, with water already connected and sanitation services to be operational before the residents move in. The electrification of the bungalows is expected to be completed by the end of the month.

"We are pleased with the progress and quality of the structures," said Van Niekerk. "We have been updating our residents regularly, and we anticipate that the families will move in once the electrification work is finalized."

The municipality is also monitoring developments in Walmer and Kariega, where additional residents from Lapland will be relocated. Regular updates will be provided to ensure clear communication with the residents.

"We are awaiting final approval from the Department of Economic Development, Environmental Affairs, and Tourism (DEDEAT). Our teams are ready to clear the site and begin construction as soon as we receive the green light," Van Niekerk added.

The Mayor thanked all stakeholders for their cooperation and residents for their patience during the ongoing work.
