Karnataka State IT/ITeS Employees' Union (KITU) has urged the Siddaramaiah-led government to reconsider its reported plans to extend the working hours of the IT/ITeS/BPO sector.
The union claims that the proposed amendment to increase work hours to 14 hours a day is an attack on workers' rights and personal life.
Labour Minister Santosh Lad and officials have agreed to more discussions before making a final decision.
The current act allows a maximum of 10 work hours per day, including overtime. The amendment may lead to a two-shift system, resulting in significant job losses, KITU warns.
KITU highlighted studies showing the negative health impacts of extended working hours, noting that global trends are moving toward recognizing shorter work hours and the 'right to disconnect.' The union urged the government to reconsider and warned of resistance from the 20 lakh employees in the IT/ITeS sector if the amendment proceeds.
