The Delhi High Court has transferred the investigation of 23-year-old Faizan's murder during the 2020 North East Delhi riots to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
Faizan, along with four others, was allegedly beaten by police officers and forced to sing the national anthem. He later died following his release from police custody. The court remarked on the lethargic and inadequate investigation by the Delhi Police, sparing those suspected of brutally assaulting Faizan.
The court highlighted the dire negligence on the part of the police, noting that Faizan was denied critical medical care while detained. Sophisticated forensic tests on the implicated police officers, conducted years after the incident, were deemed questionable. The court confirmed the presence of video footage showing Faizan and others being assaulted by policemen.
Despite the passage of over four years, no police officers involved have been conclusively identified. The CBI is now tasked with further investigation, with complete access to all existing material and evidence.
