At a meeting with senior Education department officials on Tuesday, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu stressed the state government's focus on enhancing the quality of education in public schools. He expressed alarm over the significant decrease in government primary school enrollments, which fell from 130,466 in 2002-2003 to 49,295 in 2023-24, according to an official release.

Sukhu highlighted that 89 government primary schools and 10 middle schools currently have zero students. Additionally, 701 primary schools have fewer than five students, with many located within a two-kilometer radius of another school. Furthermore, 46 middle schools lie within three kilometers of another, with only five students each in some cases. In response, Sukhu directed the Education department to consider merging low-enrollment schools to optimize staff distribution and enhance educational quality.

The Chief Minister announced the phased establishment of Rajiv Gandhi Day Boarding Schools in each Assembly constituency to ensure quality education and holistic student development. Two such schools will be built in Kinnaur and Spiti tribal areas. The department has been instructed to identify suitable land for these institutions.

To improve resource utilization, the government has formed school clusters, allowing management to select smart uniforms of their choice. New initiatives, including the introduction of English medium instruction from the first grade, aim to raise standards in government schools. Education Minister Rohit Thakur, Chief Parliamentary Secretary Ashish Butail, and other senior officials provided valuable insights during the meeting.
