Suvendu Adhikari Slams Speaker for Rejecting BJP Motion on Mayor's Remarks

Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, leveled sharp criticism at Speaker Biman Banerjee on Friday for refusing to entertain the BJP's adjournment motion seeking a debate on controversial comments made by Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim. Adhikari accused the Speaker of politically motivated decision-making.

'We lodged a complaint against Firhad Hakim's inappropriate remarks. The Speaker, driven by political bias, rejected our adjournment motion,' Adhikari told reporters. 'The Speaker claimed the issue is unrelated to the state government. Hakim's comment, stating that those born in other religions are very unfortunate, cannot be overlooked,' he added.

Earlier, Adhikari submitted an adjournment motion proposal demanding a discussion on Hakim's statements at a community event. After the Speaker's refusal, BJP MLAs protested and stormed the Well of the House, demanding Hakim's resignation. In a related development, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced plans to protest against political discrimination at the NITI Aayog meeting in Delhi, voicing concerns over biases affecting Bengal and other opposition states.
