Janata Dal (United) spokesperson KC Tyagi has lauded the Government of India's decision to commemorate 'Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas'. However, he has urged the administration to take further steps to honor those affected by the Emergency declared on June 25, 1975. Tyagi stated that over 100,000 individuals were detained during this period, with only a few survivors remaining.

Speaking to ANI, Tyagi expressed, "We welcome the decision of the Government of India to observe 'Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas'. Over 1 lakh people were arrested on June 25, 1975. Only a few remain today, and we believe they should be respected. We propose a monthly stipend of Rs 50,000 for them and free medical treatment for their family members." Tyagi added that a party delegation plans to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and is seeking an appointment with Home Minister Amit Shah to advocate for these demands.

Earlier this month, the Union Government announced tributes to all those who endured hardship and fought against the abuses during the Emergency of 1975. The Central government declared June 25th as 'Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas' (Constitution Murder Day) through a gazette notification. The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) stated, "A proclamation of Emergency was made on June 25, 1975, leading to gross abuse of power. The people of India were subjected to excesses and atrocities." The notification further read, "The Government of India declares June 25 as 'Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas' to pay tribute to all those who suffered and fought against the abuse of power during the Emergency and to reaffirm the commitment of the people of India to prevent such abuses in the future." Shortly after the notification, Union Home Minister Amit Shah posted on X: "On June 25, 1975, the then PM Indira Gandhi displayed a dictatorial mindset by imposing the Emergency. Lakhs of people were jailed unjustly, and the voice of the media was silenced. The Government of India has decided to observe June 25 every year as 'Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas' to honor the massive contributions of all who endured the brutalities of the 1975 Emergency," he wrote.
