Rickshaw Driver Killed in Navi Mumbai Hit-and-Run: Driver Arrested

A rickshaw driver died after being struck by a speeding SUV in Navi Mumbai, in another hit-and-run incident plaguing Maharashtra. The SUV driver fled but was caught within hours. This accident has sparked public outrage and political reaction, with the police promising strict action.

A rickshaw driver lost his life on Sunday, July 28, after being hit by a speeding SUV in front of Anjuman School in Vashi, Navi Mumbai. The hit-and-run incident adds to a series of similar occurrences recently reported across the state. The SUV driver fled immediately but was apprehended within a few hours.

Pankaj Dahane, Deputy Commissioner of Police in Mumbai, stated, "The accident was captured on CCTV cameras, clearly showing the SUV driver speeding and dragging the rickshaw for a considerable distance. Instead of assisting the victim, the driver fled the scene." This incident has incited outrage among local residents. The rise in hit-and-run cases in Maharashtra has fueled political discourse, with some suspecting a personal rivalry behind this particular incident.

On July 9, a 36-year-old woman died in Nashik after being struck by a speeding car. The 52-year-old driver responsible was taken into custody. In a separate July 7 case in Worli, 45-year-old Kaveri Nakhwa was killed. The main accused, Mihir Shah, was arrested and presented in Sewri Court today. Shah had been absconding after allegedly driving a car into a scooter on Dr. Annie Besant Road. Additionally, on May 19, a luxury car allegedly driven by a 17-year-old under the influence of alcohol resulted in the deaths of two software engineers in Pune's Kalyani Nagar area.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has expressed alarm at the rise of hit-and-run incidents in the state and has instructed the police to take stringent action, assuring that the guilty will not be spared.
