The Supreme Court on Monday rejected the Directorate of Enforcement's (ED) plea to cancel the bail of Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, providing major relief to the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) leader. Justices BR Gavai and KV Viswanathan stated, 'We are not inclined to interfere with the impugned order,' noting the High Court’s well-reasoned judgment.
The court clarified that observations made regarding the bail would not affect the trial judge during further proceedings. Although Additional Solicitor General SV Raju, representing the ED, emphasized the need to revoke Soren's bail, the Supreme Court refrained from further comments, cautioning the ED against additional observations.
The case involves alleged money laundering and a land scam where Soren was accused of generating substantial proceeds through the forgery of official records. Following his bail grant by the Jharkhand High Court, Soren resumed his Chief Minister role. He later won a floor test with the support of 45 MLAs, reaffirming his position and addressing accusations from the BJP as baseless.
