The death toll in the Wayanad landslide tragedy climbed to 143 on Wednesday, with multiple injuries and several people still trapped, according to the State Health Department. Relief and rescue operations are underway in Wayanad's Chooralmala after the massive landslide hit the region.

The landslide wreaked havoc, damaging houses and roads, uprooting trees, and causing water bodies to overflow, which has hindered rescue efforts. In response, the Kerala Legislative Assembly has observed a two-day mourning period with the national flag at half-mast.

Union Minister George Kurian arrived in Wayanad on Tuesday to review relief operations, meeting with senior officials from NDRF, CRPF, and the Army, and visiting a relief camp in Kalpetta late at night. NDRF Commander Akhilesh Kumar reported the rescue of 70 people despite bad weather, and warned that more victims might be trapped in collapsed buildings.
