Shimla's Transformative Ropeway Project Set to Revolutionize Urban Transport

RTDC has launched a Rs. 1734.70 crore project to establish a 13.79 km urban ropeway network in Shimla. Aimed at alleviating traffic congestion, the project promises eco-friendly and efficient commuting with significant socio-economic benefits. Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri presided over a symposium outlining the comprehensive framework for this initiative.

In an effort to mitigate growing vehicular congestion in Shimla, the Ropeway and Rapid Transport System Development Corporation (RTDC) has launched a groundbreaking project to establish an urban ropeway network. Valued at Rs. 1734.70 crore, the project will span 13.79 kilometres and feature 13 boarding and de-boarding stations, along with one turning station.

Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri, who also serves as the transport minister, officiated a symposium organized by RTDC to discuss the comprehensive framework for the project. He emphasized its potential to significantly alleviate traffic issues in Shimla for the next 40 years. "This project represents a pivotal advancement in Shimla's transport infrastructure, focusing on eco-friendliness and efficiency," said Engineer Ajay Sharma, RTDC's Director. Sharma stressed the integration of modern technology to ensure minimal ecological impact while improving the quality of life for residents and visitors.

Promising numerous benefits, the urban ropeway project aims to reduce air and noise pollution, enhance safety, and improve connectivity. Set to be the largest of its kind in India and the second largest globally, the project has secured 80% of its funding from multinational banks as an Externally Aided Project (EAP). "The financing model highlights our commitment to leveraging international expertise and resources," Sharma noted. The ropeway will employ Mono Cable Detachable (MDG) Gondola technology, ensuring a capacity of 3,000 persons per hour per direction. It aims to complement existing transport infrastructure, providing seamless connectivity across Shimla.

Expected to generate significant socio-economic benefits, including job creation and boosted tourism, the project is slated for completion by 2025. "Our goal is to set a precedent for similar sustainable transport initiatives across India," Sharma remarked. RTDC is currently preparing for the next phase of implementation, following productive discussions with stakeholders and international financiers.
