Delhi Government Gears Up to Combat Winter Air Pollution

The Kejriwal government is preparing to tackle winter air pollution in Delhi. Environment Minister Gopal Rai announced a 'Save Environment' Round Table Conference on August 21 to form a robust winter action plan aimed at reducing pollution through public participation and expert suggestions.

The Arvind Kejriwal-led Delhi government has ramped up efforts to control air pollution during the winter season. Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai chaired a high-level meeting with key departments, including the Environment Department, Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC), and Development Department.

“On August 21, a 'Save Environment' Round Table Conference will be convened at Delhi Secretariat with environmental experts to draft a winter action plan,” stated Environment Minister Gopal Rai. The main goal is to combat pollution through public participation, following a comprehensive review meeting with senior officials from the involved departments.

The minister emphasized several core areas identified during the meeting: dust pollution, vehicular emissions, stubble burning, and garbage incineration. He said the government aims to ensure that all registered industrial units in Delhi switch to PNG. A Green War Room and a Green Delhi App have been launched to facilitate better communication with the public and address their complaints promptly.

Hotspots, or areas most affected by pollution, will be a key focus. A real-time apportionment study will help identify immediate pollution sources. Additionally, India's first E-Waste Eco Park in Holambi Kalan will operate on a zero-waste policy.

The government will also focus on increasing green areas and promoting public awareness and participation. Campaigns against pollution, a ban on firecrackers, and collaboration with the central government and neighboring states are also part of the agenda. The implementation of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) will be central to further developments.

On the recommendations from the 'Save Environment' Round Table Conference, the Delhi government plans to take action to mitigate pollution sources effectively. This initiative aims to create a comprehensive approach to tackling Delhi’s air pollution problem.
