Delhi's Karkardooma Court has reassigned the Baby Care New Born Child Hospital fire case to the District Judge (Shahadara) for additional hearings. The judicial magistrate acknowledged the charge sheet submitted by the Delhi Police, which implicates two doctors, including the hospital's owner. The tragic incident took place on the night of May 25 in Vivek Vihar and led to the death of eight newborn babies.
Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Vidhi Gupta Anand has been instructed to present the case before the District Judge on August 8. The police have charged the hospital owner, Dr. Naveen Khichi, and Dr. Akash under sections 304, 308, 34 of the IPC and Section 75 of the JJ Act. Both doctors were arrested shortly after the incident.
In their 1000-page charge sheet, the police included a list of 80 prosecution witnesses and other evidence collected during the investigation. An FIR was initially registered at the Vivek Vihar police station on May 26, 2024. According to the police, the hospital had multiple safety violations including expired licenses, lack of fire extinguishers, and improper emergency exits. The fire was likely caused by a short circuit, as indicated by a report from the Electric Inspector of the Labour Department of the Delhi government.
