The IPC Famine Review Committee (FRC) report has highlighted the dire famine conditions currently affecting North Darfur near El-Fasher and potentially 14 other regions in Sudan. The report confirms the alarming predictions of famine, indicating that it is not just a future threat but an immediate and severe crisis.

Key findings from the report reveal that 70% of rural households in the affected areas did not cultivate any land during the 2023 summer season, exacerbating the risk of widespread famine. Additionally, a quarter of rural households faced safety concerns that prevented them from accessing markets, and 43% were unable to afford food even when available. The situation is expected to deteriorate further if humanitarian access remains restricted and the conflict continues.

UNDP emphasizes the need for urgent action to prevent further famine. The organization calls on the warring parties to cease hostilities and ensure unrestricted access to the Greater Darfur states for humanitarian aid. Immediate food and humanitarian assistance are essential, but UNDP also stresses the importance of supporting livelihoods through investments in irrigation infrastructure and agricultural resources. This dual approach aims to address both immediate needs and long-term sustainability.

UNDP is committed to enhancing the resilience of the Sudanese population by expanding agricultural production, delivering essential services, and supporting infrastructure development. As the lead development agency in the Inter-Agency Standing Committee (IASC), UNDP is prepared to leverage its resources and expertise to support humanitarian efforts and mitigate the effects of the famine.
