Clash Over Waqf Board: Upadhyay and Owaisi Lock Horns

Advocate Ashwini Upadhyay on Monday criticized AMIM Chief Asaduddin Owaisi, questioning the constitutional validity of the Waqf Board. 'Owaisi, being a Barrister, should show us where the word Waqf appears in the Constitution,' Upadhyay demanded.

Upadhyay argued that the existence of the Waqf Board violates the principles of equality and justice, while also questioning the unique judicial framework for Waqf-related cases. He claimed that the Waqf Board's vast land holdings and legislative backing were initially established by Jawaharlal Nehru and strengthened by subsequent Congress governments.

Responding to government plans to amend the Waqf Act, Owaisi accused the Modi administration of attempting to undermine the Board's autonomy and pursue a Hindutva agenda. He warned that the amendments could lead to administrative chaos and the loss of the Board's independence. The central government is reportedly considering 32-40 amendments that could include mandatory property registration and enhanced inclusivity by ensuring women's representation.
