Anthrax Outbreak in Shandong Province: Five Infected, Farm Shut Down

In Shandong province, China, five individuals were diagnosed with cutaneous anthrax following an outbreak at a beef cattle farm. The local authorities have culled all livestock and shut down the farm. The infected individuals are receiving treatment in isolation. Anthrax is preventable and treatable, with transmission between humans being rare.

In a recent incident, China's eastern Shandong province reported that five individuals had been infected with anthrax, prompting the authorities to shut down a beef cattle farm after identifying an outbreak. According to a statement by Yanggu county's disease control and prevention center on WeChat, all livestock on the affected farm have been culled to prevent further spread.

The five farm workers, who had direct contact with the infected animals, were diagnosed with cutaneous anthrax and are currently undergoing treatment in isolation. "Cutaneous anthrax is a zoonotic infectious disease that is preventable, controllable, and treatable, with rare transmission between humans," the center stated.

Anthrax, a bacterial infection found naturally in soil, commonly affects animals exposed to spores in contaminated soil, plants, or water. Susceptible herbivores, such as cattle, mules, sheep, horses, and donkeys, are at higher risk. It's not contagious between humans, and infection typically occurs through ingesting the bacteria.
