Caught in Crisis: Migrants Grapple with Portugal's Housing Woes

Andreia Costa, a 50-year-old carpenter, moved from Brazil to Portugal in 2022 seeking a better life, only to be confronted by a severe housing crisis. Even with legal entry and employment, she found herself living in a tent due to unaffordable rents.

On the outskirts of Lisbon, Costa and fellow migrants faced skyrocketing rent costs; a 94% increase since 2015 and house prices up by 186%. Portugal remains one of Western Europe’s poorest nations, with significant wage disparities further compounding the issue.

The housing crunch is driven by a shortage of affordable homes, exacerbated by wealthy foreign investors and a booming tourism industry. The government’s new migration policies and potential adjustments to the golden visa scheme aim to address the crisis, but migrants continue to face precarious living conditions and discrimination.
