Rekha Sharma, chairperson of the National Commission for Women (NCW), ended her tenure on Tuesday. Sharma, 60, took charge on August 7, 2018, after joining the NCW as a member in 2015 and taking additional charge from September 29, 2017.

Reflecting on her nine years with the NCW, Sharma said her journey had been like a roller coaster. She expressed gratitude for the overwhelming love and support she received from women across the country and highlighted key moments that had a lasting impact on her, including her interactions with women in mental asylums, Vrindavan Ashram, and prisons.

Sharma's tenure was not without controversy, facing criticism for alleged inaction in violence-hit Manipur and purported inaction in BJP-ruled states. Despite this, she remained a vocal advocate for gender sensitisation of police personnel and expressed no regrets for her time in office.
