Vinesh Phogat Disqualification: PM Modi Consoles, BJP MP Calls It 'Loss for India'

Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat's disqualification from the Paris Olympics 2024 is seen as a significant setback. BJP MP Karan Bhushan Singh called it a loss for the country, while Prime Minister Narendra Modi consoled Phogat, emphasizing her resilience and urging the Indian Olympic Association to support her case.

Reacting to Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat's disqualification from the Paris Olympics 2024, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Karan Bhushan Singh termed it a loss for the country. "It is a loss for the country. The Federation will take this into consideration and see what can be done," Singh said.

Shortly after India faced a huge setback with Phogat's disqualification from the 50 kg Women's wrestling final, Prime Minister Narendra Modi consoled the grappler. In a post on X, Modi termed Vinesh a champion among champions, expressing deep regret over the situation.

"Vinesh, you are a champion among champions! You are India's pride and an inspiration for every Indian. Today's setback hurts. While words may fall short, your resilience remains unwavering. Come back stronger! We are all rooting for you," the Prime Minister said. He also sought detailed information from IOA President PT Usha, recommending a strong protest if it could aid Phogat’s case.

Eager to explore all possible options, the Prime Minister asked the IOA to thoroughly examine the circumstances surrounding Vinesh's disqualification. This follows a major blow to India's medal aspirations as Phogat was set to compete against USA's Sarah Ann Hildebrandt in the final. A statement by the Indian Olympic contingent revealed Phogat's disqualification stemmed from weighing in above the 50 kg limit. (ANI)
