Assam and Mizoram Commit to Peaceful Border Resolution in Landmark Meeting

Assam Border Protection & Development Minister Atul Bora expressed gratitude to Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma for their commitment to resolving border issues. A joint statement signed during the meeting reaffirmed efforts to maintain peace and harmony along the inter-state border, with cultural events planned to strengthen goodwill.

In a significant move towards lasting peace, Assam Border Protection & Development Minister Atul Bora met with Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma in Aizawl on Saturday, expressing his gratitude for the commitment to resolving long-standing border disputes. Bora thanked Lalduhoma for Mizoram's dedication to addressing the issues amicably.

The meeting saw participation from Lalmuanpuia Punte, Adviser to the Mizoram CM, alongside senior officials from both states. It followed an earlier meeting on Friday where Bora, leading an Assam delegation, engaged with Mizoram's Home Minister K. Sapdanga and Minister of Land, Revenue, and Settlement B. Lalchhanzova.

In a joint statement, Mizoram Home Minister K. Sapdanga and Assam's Atul Bora reaffirmed their commitment to the 'Goodwill Mission' initiated on August 9, 2024. They agreed to continue promoting peace and prevent any incidents along the border. Plans include joint cultural and sports festivals, with the first event scheduled by January 31, 2025. The border dispute affects six districts sharing a 164.6 km border.

Assam recognizes the border as defined in 1933 and by the State of Mizoram Act, 1986, while Mizoram refers to the 1875 Inner Line Notification. Efforts to maintain the status quo were agreed upon in a 2014 meeting. Though historically peaceful, the dispute turned violent in July 2021, resulting in casualties. Multiple attempts since have aimed at an amicable resolution. Mizoram, initially a Union Territory in 1972, achieved statehood in 1987 and began disputing the border thereafter.
