The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has expressed profound shock and indignation following the heinous murder of a second-year postgraduate student at R.G. Kar Medical College, Kolkata. According to a press release by the IMA, the crime, which allegedly involved sexual assault prior to the murder, took place in the seminar hall on the third floor of the campus.
The IMA has condemned the incident, calling it a glaring example of prevailing anarchy and insecurity within academic institutions. The association has emphasized the critical need for ensuring the safety and security of students and medical professionals in educational settings.
This condemnation comes shortly after another tragic event where a young resident doctor in Kerala was fatally attacked in a hospital's casualty ward. These occurrences point to a worrisome trend of growing violence against medical professionals, especially women. The IMA stated, "Doctors, particularly women, are vulnerable to violence due to the nature of the profession. It is the responsibility of authorities to ensure the safety of doctors within hospitals and campuses."
The IMA has called for a thorough and unbiased investigation into the murder of Ms. Debnath and the arrest of the perpetrators, as well as a detailed inquiry into the circumstances that allowed the crime to occur. In a sternly worded statement, the IMA has demanded that authorities act within 48 hours. Failure to do so will compel the association to initiate nationwide protests.
"We demand that the authorities act with precision within 48 hours. Failing which, IMA will be forced to initiate nationwide action. A fair, transparent, and time-sensitive criminal investigation is in order. An ultimatum of two days is given to arrest the culprits; otherwise, IMA will take nationwide protests," the IMA declared in the statement. (ANI)
