Tourism and Hospitality Minister Matt Doocey has announced the launch of a new fund aimed at establishing e-bike charging stations along New Zealand's iconic Great Rides. This initiative is part of the government's strategy to enhance the accessibility and appeal of the country's cycle trails, ensuring that more people can enjoy these stunning routes firsthand.

"The Great Rides attract over one million visitors each year, contributing approximately $1 billion to the regional economy," said Minister Doocey. "This investment is key to unlocking economic growth in these areas and supporting tourism operators in delivering world-class experiences."

With the increasing popularity of e-bikes and the rising demand for nature-based, low-impact tourism, the government aims to modernize the cycle trails by installing reliable e-bike infrastructure. "This will make the trails more accessible to people of all ages and fitness levels," Doocey noted.

He emphasized that as e-bikes become more affordable and advanced, and as both international tourists and New Zealanders seek more environmentally conscious experiences, the Great Rides will play a crucial role in the country's tourism offerings and economic recovery.

The Great Rides, a successful collaboration between central and local governments and the communities that host the trails, have been providing economic benefits for over a decade. "The 23 world-class trails not only create jobs directly on the trails but also support businesses like bike hire, tour companies, and hospitality and accommodation services along the routes," Doocey added.

During his announcement, Minister Doocey highlighted his recent visits to the West Coast Wilderness Trail and the Whakarewarewa Forest Loop track, where he experienced firsthand the significant draw these trails have for both domestic and international tourists.

"This new fund will open up further economic opportunities for Great Ride providers, councils, and central government to explore, ensuring that these trails continue to thrive and contribute to New Zealand's economy," he concluded.
