Jammu & Kashmir Assembly Elections Scheduled in Three Phases Starting September 18

The Chief Election Commissioner announced that the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections will be held in three phases: September 18, September 25, and October 1, with counting on October 4. Nominations are due by August 27, September 5, and September 12 for each respective phase.

The Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir are scheduled to commence on September 18 and will be conducted in three phases, announced Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar on Friday. Speaking at a press conference in New Delhi, Kumar detailed that the phases of voting will occur on September 18, September 25, and October 1.

The election results will be tallied on October 4. In his statement, Kumar emphasized the inclusion of voters, stating, 'Assembly polls in Jammu and Kashmir will be held in three phases, with voting on September 18th, September 25th, and October 1st. Counting of votes on October 4.'

Key dates for filing nominations have been set: August 27 for the first phase, September 5 for the second phase, and September 12 for the third. 'During Lok Sabha elections in J-K, people were there to participate in the elections. The long queues and the shine on their faces were a testament to this,' Kumar noted, highlighting the vibrant political engagement in the region.

Earlier, on August 14, the Election Commission convened with Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla to discuss security arrangements. Jammu and Kashmir have 90 assembly constituencies: 74 General, nine ST, and seven SC. The electorate totals 87.09 lakh, comprising 44.46 lakh males, 42.62 lakh females, 169 transgender individuals, 82,590 PwDs, and other significant voter segments.

The last assembly election in the region was held in 2014, with the process further delayed by the dissolution of the PDP-BJP coalition government in June 2018. The Supreme Court has mandated the completion of the election process by September 30, 2024.
