Doctors in Maharashtra took to the streets on Saturday, protesting the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The medical community is calling for stringent laws to protect on-duty doctors, claiming they deserve the same level of protection as police officers.
One protesting doctor told ANI, 'A law should protect on-duty doctors just as it protects police officers. If female doctors aren't safe at work, where are they safe? Politicians should be ashamed.' Another doctor added, 'We work day and night for patients, prioritizing our patients over our families. If a female doctor is not safe at her workplace, where else will she be safe?'
Another protesting doctor highlighted the brutality of the crime, suggesting that the assault involved multiple perpetrators familiar with medical procedures. 'All hospitals should provide security, and female doctors should be protected wherever they are,' he said. The protests were further fueled by an incident on August 14, when a mob vandalized the protest site at RG Kar Hospital, forcing security officials to intervene.
