The brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata has sparked widespread outrage and demands for justice. Members of the LGBTQIA+ community staged a protest on Saturday, calling for accountability and condemning police attempts to disrupt their peaceful demonstration.

'We want to hold a peaceful protest against the rape and murder of the RG Kar Hospital doctor. But the police are trying to stop our protest. However, our protest will continue and move forward. Anyone who is against rape can join this protest,' said a member of the trans community to ANI.

This incident has drawn reactions from various sectors, including junior doctors and medical students who protested at Mangalagiri AIIMS and Lady Hardinge Medical College in Delhi. West Bengal Congress and ABVP workers also voiced their outrage, protesting against the TMC government.

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has declared a 24-hour withdrawal of services by modern medicine doctors starting from August 17 to August 18. IMA National President Dr. Asokan urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene and address this grave issue. While emergency services will remain operational, OPDs and elective surgeries will be suspended during this period.

On August 14, a mob of 5,000 to 7,000 people invaded RG Kar Hospital, attacking doctors and medical students, and attempting to ransack the premises. Kolkata police have since arrested 19 individuals allegedly involved in the violence.

The tragic death of the postgraduate trainee doctor on August 9 at the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College has left the nation in shock, prompting widespread protests and demands for justice.
