CBI Investigates Kolkata Rape-Murder Case Amid National Protests

The CBI inspected RG Kar Medical College in their ongoing probe of the Kolkata rape-murder case. Protests demanding justice erupted nationwide, leading to the Supreme Court's involvement. Demonstrations were held by doctors, medical students, and football fans, prompting law enforcement responses and legal measures to maintain order.

A Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) team on Monday inspected various areas of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital as part of their ongoing investigation into the Kolkata rape and murder case. Sources indicate that the CBI has also received permission to conduct a polygraph test on the arrested suspect.

On August 18, the CBI carried out 3D laser mapping in the emergency ward of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital as part of their thorough examination of the case. This heinous crime has sparked widespread outrage and protests across multiple cities, with calls for justice and punishment for the accused growing louder.

The Supreme Court has taken suo motu cognizance of the case, with a bench led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud scheduled to hear the matter on August 20. Earlier in the day, Calcutta High Court advocates staged a protest march demanding justice for the victim and severe penalties for the accused.

In Delhi, doctors from Maulana Azad Medical College and resident doctors from the Northern Railway Central Hospital demonstrated outside Nirman Bhawan, insisting on justice for the victim. Similar protests took place in Chandigarh, where doctors from PGIMER expressed their outrage. Mumbai witnessed demonstrations at Azad Maidan organized by doctors and concerned citizens.

In Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, doctors and medical students from King George's Medical University observed a protest by tying 'black Rakhi' to push for justice in the Kolkata rape-murder case. Meanwhile, in Kolkata, female police personnel showed solidarity by tying Rakhi to doctors and medical students demanding the same.

On August 18, football fans voiced their protests near Salt Lake Stadium, leading to the cancellation of the Durand Cup match between Mohun Bagan and East Bengal. In Kolkata, junior doctors and students continued their protests at RG Kar Medical College. The postgraduate trainee doctor was found deceased in the seminar hall of the college on August 9.

On August 14, a mob vandalized the protest site and hospital campus at RG Kar, necessitating police intervention. To maintain order, Kolkata police have imposed Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 (formerly Section 144 of the CrPC), around the Medical College for seven days, from Sunday (August 18) to Saturday (August 24).
