Govind Mohan Takes Charge as New Union Home Secretary

Govind Mohan, an experienced IAS officer, succeeded Ajay Kumar Bhalla as the Union Home Secretary. Mohan, with a strong academic background and substantial experience in various governmental roles, faces immediate challenges including secure Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir.

Govind Mohan, a seasoned bureaucrat and senior Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer, stepped into the role of Union Home Secretary on Friday. He replaced Ajay Kumar Bhalla, whose extended five-year tenure concluded as he reached the age of superannuation.

Mohan, an alumnus of Banaras Hindu University (BHU) and IIM Ahmedabad, was previously the Union Culture Secretary. The 1989 batch IAS officer of the Sikkim cadre was appointed to the Union Home Ministry as an Officer on Special Duty on August 14. Known for his diligence and extensive experience, Mohan, who turns 59 next month, brings significant expertise from his previous roles in both the Sikkim and Central governments.

Among his key tasks, Mohan will work closely with the Election Commission (EC) to ensure smooth and secure Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir. His predecessor, Bhalla, had a meeting with the EC last Wednesday to discuss security and force mobilisation in the region. Mohan's past achievements include heading crucial projects during his tenure at the Ministry of Home Affairs and launching notable cultural programs like 'Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav' and 'Har Ghar Tiranga movement' as the Union Culture Secretary.
