Gazprom's Financial Turnaround: Massive Profits Amidst Market Shift
Gazprom, the Kremlin-owned gas giant, reported a significant financial turnaround in the first half of the year, with net income surpassing 1 trillion roubles due to increased gas exports and cost controls. This recovery follows a substantial loss in 2023 caused by reduced trade with Europe amid geopolitical tensions.
In a striking financial reversal, Kremlin-owned gas giant Gazprom announced on Thursday that its net income for the first half of the year had more than tripled compared to the previous year, soaring past 1 trillion roubles ($10.9 billion). This surge in profitability is attributed to rising gas exports and stringent cost controls.
Gazprom had recorded a net loss of approximately $7 billion in 2023, marking its first year in the red since 1999, primarily due to a dramatic decline in its European gas trade following the military conflict in Ukraine. Deputy CEO Famil Sadygov revealed on Gazprom’s Telegram channel that core earnings rose by 19% year-on-year in the January to June period, reaching 1.459 trillion roubles, bolstered by improved oil trade and increased gas exports, particularly to China.
The company's financial health was further enhanced by an increased stake in the Sakhalin Energy oil and gas project situated in Russia's Pacific region. Adjusted net profit, which forms the base for dividend payouts, stood at 779 billion roubles for the first six months. Gazprom reported a net income of 389.7 billion roubles in the second quarter, a sharp contrast to the 18.6 billion roubles loss a year earlier.
Amid extensive Western sanctions over the Ukraine conflict, Russia has been diversifying its trade, strengthening ties with Asian markets, especially China. Gazprom’s CEO Alexei Miller disclosed that natural gas exports to China escalated by 37% in the first eight months of the year.
