Household Savings Surge: India's Economic Backbone Reinforced
Household savings in India, which had declined significantly in 2020-21, are now increasing and are set to be the top net lenders to the economy in the coming decades, according to Reserve Bank Deputy Governor Michael Debabrata Patra. Boosted by rising incomes, households have boosted their financial and physical assets post-pandemic.

Household savings in India are on the rise again after a sharp decline in 2020-21, positioning them as the top net lenders to the economy for decades to come, Reserve Bank Deputy Governor Michael Debabrata Patra announced on Tuesday. He emphasized the household sector generates surplus savings relative to its investment, lending to other sectors.
Patra attributed the recent dip in net financial savings to behavioral changes, including the unwinding of prudential savings accumulated during the pandemic and a shift from financial assets to physical assets like housing. He cited rising incomes as a key driver for households bolstering their financial assets, which has already increased from 10.6% of GDP during 2011-17 to 11.5% during 2017-23, excluding the pandemic year.
Additionally, household physical savings have also increased, rising to over 12% of GDP in the post-pandemic years. This trend is expected to continue, reinforcing households' role as net lenders in the economy, especially as private corporate sectors reduce net borrowings and public sectors moderate net dissaving.
