The Rouse Avenue court has issued a notice to the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to respond to the bail plea filed by Anubrata Mondal in connection with a cattle smuggling case. Mondal, previously granted bail by the Supreme Court in a related CBI case, remains in custody.

Special CBI Judge Jyot Kler issued the notice on September 4, with a hearing scheduled for September 11. The bail petition, filed by advocates Mustafa and Ahmad Ibrahim, contends that Mondal has been incarcerated since November 17, 2022, with no trial in sight.

The defense claims that delays by the prosecuting agency, including failure to provide complete documentation, have prevented the trial from progressing. They argue that even if charges are framed, the trial could be prolonged due to the large number of witnesses. Mondal, aged 65 and suffering from multiple health issues, requires continuous medical care.

According to his counsels, his medical conditions, including radiculopathy and severe lower limb pain, hinder his mobility. Additionally, Mondal's claustrophobia has impeded necessary medical tests. The defense highlights his need for family support during medical procedures, emphasizing his urgent need for bail.
