In a significant development, the Delhi High Court has suspended the six-month imprisonment sentence of former Congress MLA Asif Mohd. Khan. The ex-legislator was earlier sentenced to jail for encroaching on Delhi Development Authority (DDA) land. As part of the suspension terms, Khan is directed to deposit Rs. 2 lakhs, contributing to the Rs. 5 lakh compensation to the DDA.
Previously, Delhi's Saket Court had dismissed Khan's appeal and upheld his six-month imprisonment sentence. The former MLA had been convicted and sentenced under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act, 1984, for removing barbed wire from DDA land and constructing a platform.
Additional Sessions Judge Vishal Singh had also upheld the lower court's judgment, emphasizing that the evidence provided was substantial. The trial court's decision was deemed well-reasoned and just, leading to the dismissal of Khan's appeal. The High Court has now sought a reply from the DDA following this suspension order.
