Growing Preference for Online Vehicle Licence Renewals as Motorists Ditch Queues

Vehicle owners are increasingly turning to the convenience of online platforms to renew their vehicle licences, avoiding long queues at licensing centres. Since its launch in 2022, the Road Traffic Management Corporation's (RTMC) online platform, online.natis, has seen over 2.5 million users opting for online renewals.

Monthly renewals have surged from 44,802 in August 2022 to 222,606 last month, with an average of 7,181 renewals per day. Motorists can now easily renew their licences from their homes or offices by registering their profile on online.natis.gov.za, which allows them to update their contact details and receive renewal notices. The platform also enables online payment of AARTO enforcement orders.

Additionally, banks like First National Bank, Capitec, and Nedbank now offer the online renewal service. Fleet owners can benefit from bulk renewal services, with the RTMC delivering licences within three to five days 97% of the time.

Since the beginning of 2024, more than five million vehicle licence renewal notices have been sent out, showcasing the growing adoption of online services.
