On Wednesday, the Delhi High Court issued a notice to the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) following a petition by wrestler Bajrang Punia challenging his provisional suspension. Punia's petition also disputes the formal Notice of Charge dated June 21, 2024, which seeks to ban him for up to four years.
Regarded as an influential figure in Indian wrestling, Punia has represented India since the 2013 Asian Wrestling Championships and has won several prestigious awards, such as the bronze medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, and gold medals at the 2018 Asian Games and 2022 Commonwealth Games. His contributions extend beyond the mat as an advocate and activist for sports development in India.
Justice Sanjeev Narula has called for NADA’s response and set October 16 for further hearings, but refused to provide interim relief. Senior advocate Rajiv Dutta and Vidushpat Singhania, representing Punia, argued against the provisional suspension and questioned the validity of the testing kit used. They stressed that Punia’s impending participation in the world wrestling championship could be jeopardized.
The court, however, emphasized the necessity of hearing from the other side. The defense stated that a mechanism for redressal exists. Punia is seeking the suspension or quashing of the June 21, 2024 notice, which he claims was issued without proper consideration of his evidence and explanations.
Punia has also requested an independent investigation into the use of outdated testing kits and alleged rule violations by NADA on multiple dates. He contends that NADA’s actions violate the National Anti-Doping Act, 2022, and infringe upon his fundamental rights under Articles 19 and 21 of the Indian Constitution.
Moreover, Punia highlighted his involvement in protests against the former President of the Wrestling Federation of India, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, amid sexual harassment allegations. He was among the athletes advocating for Singh's resignation in January 2023.
