TMC MP Haji Sheikh Nurul Islam from Basirhat, West Bengal, passed away on Wednesday at 61. He succumbed to cancer at his residence in North 24 Parganas district.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed sorrow on social media, calling him a 'dedicated social worker' and praised his work in uplifting poor communities in the Sundarban area. 'People of Basirhat will miss his leadership,' she posted on X.
Other political figures, including TMC Rajya Sabha MP Sushmita Dev and MLA Madan Mitra, extended their condolences. Islam was remembered as a 'great social worker' and an influential leader who won the Basirhat seat in the 2024 Lok Sabha Election with over 3 lakh votes.
