Sharad Pawar, leader of the National Congress Party, has voiced mounting public discontent over escalating violence and sexual assaults targeting women in Maharashtra. Citing a recent rape case in Pune, Pawar emphasized the paradox of rising atrocities against women despite the government's Ladki Bahin Scheme aimed at providing financial support to women.
Pawar referred to the shocking incident on September 27 in Pune, where four individuals were arrested for allegedly raping a 16-year-old college student, according to Pune Police. The incident sparked significant outrage, underscoring a disconnect between governmental measures and the grim reality faced by women in the state.
In a related incident, a 21-year-old woman was reportedly raped by three unidentified men in Pune's Bopdev Ghat area on Thursday night, as confirmed by Kondwa police. NCP-SCP working president Supriya Sule condemned the lack of effective action from the state home department, accusing them of failing to curb the rising violence and questioning the safety of women in Maharashtra.
