Ecole Polytechnique's Bold Steps to Strengthen India-France Academic Ties

Ecole Polytechnique is enhancing collaborations with Indian institutions through student exchanges. Discussions include partnerships with IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi, aiming to double Indian student numbers. The focus is on research-oriented education and potential new agreements with IISc Bangalore amidst strategic goals to reinforce Indo-French educational ties.

In a significant move to bolster academic partnerships, France's esteemed Ecole Polytechnique is deepening its ties with Indian educational institutions by expanding student exchange programs. Laura Chaubard, the institution's Director General, is visiting India to explore new avenues for student mobility between the two countries.

Recently, Ecole Polytechnique signed agreements with IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi, marking a significant step in reinforcing these collaborations. Chaubard expressed enthusiasm about welcoming Indian students to their programs and offering opportunities for French students to study in India. Presently, approximately 80 Indian students are at Ecole Polytechnique, a number Chaubard is keen to double, banking on the historic ties between India and France.

With the recent agreement during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to France in July 2023 to boost the number of Indian students there to 30,000 by 2030, Chaubard highlights shared values in research-focused education. Discussions with IISc Bangalore are ongoing to explore joint PhD programs and possibly double degrees, enhancing faculty interactions and funding opportunities available through various scholarships.

Moreover, Chaubard mentioned the strategic roadmap laid out by President Macron to expand education partnerships with India. She sees India's innovative ecosystem, particularly in Bangalore, as aligned with Ecole Polytechnique's values and aims to leverage success stories of Indian alumni for broader collaboration. The French government's initiatives, including English medium courses and relaxed visa policies, aim to attract more Indian students, bolstered by a 2018 agreement on mutual degree recognition.
