RTMC Urges Motorists to Drive Safely Amid Stricter New Year Road Regulations
Holiday road safety campaign leads to over 6,470 arrests and removal of unroadworthy vehicles.

- South Africa
As the New Year approaches, the National Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has intensified its call for motorists to adhere to road rules and drive cautiously. With stricter enforcement in place, the RTMC is focusing on ensuring the safety of road users during this high-traffic period.
Since the launch of the festive season road safety campaign on December 1, over one million vehicles have been stopped and inspected across the country. This has led to 6,470 arrests for offenses including:
- Drunken driving.
- Excessive speeding.
- Driving without licenses.
- Reckless driving.
- Overloading.
In addition, more than 120 pedestrians have been detained for jaywalking and endangering other road users.
Unroadworthy Vehicles and Permit Violations
Traffic officials have intensified inspections to identify unroadworthy vehicles and permit violations:
- 9,309 vehicles were discontinued and declared unfit for use on public roads.
- Over 5,700 public transport vehicles were impounded for operating without proper permits.
Motorists are urged to ensure their vehicles are in roadworthy condition, and public transport operators must secure valid permits before embarking on journeys.
Road Safety Tips Issued by RTMC
The RTMC has shared vital road safety advice for motorists navigating adverse weather and heavy traffic conditions:
- Reduce speed and increase following distances: Wet roads and low visibility heighten the risk of collisions.
- Avoid driving in flooded areas: Refrain from crossing submerged roads or low-lying areas.
- Stay alert to strong winds: High-sided vehicles are particularly vulnerable to destabilization.
- Check weather and road updates: Use reliable sources to stay informed about conditions.
- Be prepared for lightning and hail: Park safely and avoid stopping under trees or power lines.
- Stay hydrated and avoid heat exhaustion: Rest frequently and drink water during long trips, especially in extreme heat.
Advisories for Long-Distance Drivers and Public Transport Operators
Truck drivers, public transport operators, and long-distance travelers are encouraged to:
- Prioritize safety by stopping at designated rest areas during adverse weather conditions.
- Remain vigilant in wet and rainy weather to avoid accidents.
RTMC Appeals for Patience and Caution
The RTMC has emphasized that severe weather can strike unexpectedly, making responsible driving critical to preventing accidents and fatalities.
"Law enforcement will be tighter on the roads and near entertainment areas to ensure safety on New Year's Eve, New Year's Day, and the days following as holidaymakers return home," said the RTMC.
This collaborative effort aims to protect lives, reduce accidents, and promote a culture of safety on South Africa's roads during the festive season and beyond.
