In an unprecedented achievement, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) reached a pivotal milestone with the successful launch of PSLV-C60 from Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh on Monday. This mission, aimed at accomplishing the rare feat of docking two satellites in space, has been named the 'Space Docking Experiment' (SpaDeX).

The SpaDeX mission, utilizing innovative and cost-effective technology, serves as a proof-of-concept for docking in space, using two small spacecraft launched by the PSLV. The main goal is to develop and showcase the technology needed for the rendezvous and docking of spacecraft, a technological challenge mastered by only a few nations. The Chaser spacecraft, SDX01, and the Target spacecraft, SDX02, will perform this complex maneuver in low-Earth orbit.

Utilizing the indigenous 'Bharatiya Docking System', the success of SpaDeX is crucial for India's space ambitions, including future missions like 'Chandrayaan-4', the planned space station, and the manned 'Gaganyaan' project. Science and Technology Minister Jitendra Singh emphasized the mission's importance for India's future endeavors in space exploration.
