Global Interest Soars for India's BrahMos Missile

The BrahMos supersonic cruise missile, a joint venture between India and Russia, is gaining international attention, with Indonesia and several Middle Eastern and Southeast Asian countries showing interest. As India gears up to enhance its defense exports, negotiations with Indonesia are set to begin, eyeing further global collaborations.

In a recent development, India's BrahMos supersonic cruise missile has captured global attention, according to Samir V. Kamat, Chairperson of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). Countries including Indonesia, along with others from the Middle East and Southeast Asia, are expressing keen interest in acquiring this advanced weapon system.

In an interview with ANI, Kamat revealed, "Indonesia is interested...There are other countries also who have shown interest." Although he remained discreet about specific details due to the sensitive nature of the discussions, Kamat highlighted the expanding horizon of India's defense exports, projecting potential growth.

Kamat anticipates that India's defense exports could double or even triple over the next five years, with DRDO playing a vital role. He outlined ambitious targets, anticipating exports to reach Rs 26,000 crores this year and Rs 1 lakh crore by 2035.

The BrahMos missile, a successful joint endeavor with Russia's NPO Mashinostroyeniya, is considered a global leader in precision-guided weapons. The Indian Army has been utilizing BrahMos regiments since 2007, enhancing its defense capabilities significantly.

Meanwhile, sources report that India and Indonesia have agreed to commence negotiations on a potential BrahMos missile deal. Indonesian delegations are expected to arrive in India soon for talks. A key condition for the deal includes a nod from Russia. Notably, India has already sold the BrahMos missile to the Philippines, with an order valued at over USD 335 million.

Countries such as Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, and several Middle Eastern nations have shown interest in this India-Russia collaborative missile system that involves substantial Russian components. India's defense sector looks toward a promising horizon, set on expanding its export capabilities.
