On Thursday, the Kerala Assembly was a scene of commotion as opposition members protested against the reported reduction in scholarships for backward class students. The Leader of Opposition, VD Satheesan, criticized AN Shamseer's role during a walkout speech, labeling it as lacking generosity. The opposition also accused the Speaker of not allowing Satheesan adequate opportunity to voice concerns, further demonstrating their discontent by waving placards.
Despite the Speaker's call for order, the opposition staged a walkout, withholding their submission and later sharing with the media their concerns about stagnant funding for SC/ST students. Satheesan highlighted the dropout rates and financial struggles of SC/ST students and called for priority allocation of funds for education and housing for these groups. Another protest marred the assembly on Wednesday after the Speaker refused an adjournment motion addressing recent law and order issues in the state.
In related news, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan addressed a violent incident in Palakkad, where Chenthamarakshan, a local resident, allegedly murdered two neighbors. Police arrested the suspect, and further investigations are ongoing. This case is under additional scrutiny as Chenthamarakshan faces trial for a past murder charge. Authorities have opposed relaxing his bail conditions.
