Gujarat Takes Steps Toward Uniform Civil Code with High-Level Panel

A high-level committee chaired by Retired Supreme Court Judge Ranjana Desai met to discuss drafting a Uniform Civil Code for Gujarat. A high-level committee of five experts, led by Supreme Court Judge (Retd.) Ranjana Desai, gathered at Gujarat Bhawan in New Delhi on Thursday. The meeting focused on the formulation of a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) for Gujarat, with discussions delving into its objectives, scope, and implementation strategies.

In attendance were retired senior IAS officer C L Meena, Advocate R C Kodekar, former Vice Chancellor Dakshesh Thakar, and social activist Geetaben Shroff. The committee articulated a vision for a thorough revision of existing laws, paired with wide-ranging consultations with numerous stakeholders. Their goal is to craft comprehensive, equitable legislation promoting justice and equality, thus strengthening social cohesion within Gujarat.

The committee will soon submit its recommendations to the state government, eager for the guidance these insights will provide in shaping future legal structures. The UCC aims to enforce uniform personal laws across demographics, covering areas like marriage, inheritance, and adoption, thus bolstering the promise of equal rights regardless of religious or gender distinctions.
